Bentley is not lacking ambition with its new Continental GT, launched this evening. If the company genuinely believes its new £150k flagship will come to be the regarded as the “finest grand tourer ever produced”, it will need to better the likes of Ferrari, Rolls-Royce and the newly resurgent Aston Martin. That’s a very big ask. But on paper at least and in the metal, the new Continental is a very potent motorcar. And a very beautiful one too.
“Continental” was the nameplate chosen by Bentley’s new owners, Volkswagen, when way back in 2003 it chose to relaunch the brand with an extremely luxurious, extremely heavy and extremely fast grand touring car with something closer to four proper seats than any GT since the original Bentley R-Type Continental of 1952, then the world’s fastest four seater.
